앞으로 인공지능은 어떤 방향으로 발전할까요? 또 우리 일상에 어떤 편리함을 안겨줄까요?
LG전자가 ‘IFA 2018’ 개막 기조연설에서 그 답을 제시했습니다. LG전자 최고 경영진이 제시하는 인공지능의 미래는 어떤 모습인지 지금부터 함께 살펴보시죠!
CEO : Good morning! This year, LG Electronics marks its sixtieth birthday.
And I cannot think of a better place for celebration than I.F.A., International Radio Show, because LG’s very first electronic product was also radio.
And just like I.F.A., LG has come a long way
from that five-tube radio to the world first OLED TV and the world best dual washer.
Now, with world-leading products in over a hundred categories
generating fifty-five-billion-dollar sales a year, it sure has been a great journey.
Personally, I joined LG’s journey fourty-two years ago as an engineer.
And from that moment,
ALL through my time as the Head of Home Appliance and Air Solution Company
to now as the C.E.O. of LG Electronics,
my mission has been to make the best machines in the world.
And I think we have done PRETTY GREAT!
But people ask – WHY?
Why all that time and energy for machines?
Because it means a better life.
A better life for my mother, my wife, my family, and so many men and women.
To me, it’s never really about the machine.
It’s about making a better life.
A life that is FREE – free from the burdens of housework,
free from instruction manuals like bricks,
and free to pursue your dreams.
A better life.
Innovation NOT for its own sake, but innovation for a better life.
It’s NOT just a slogan. It’s in everything we do at LG, everything I do.
And that is why we are SO excited about artificial intelligence –
Because it presents a new possibility to make better life EVEN better.

And to tell you just how we will make it ALL happen,

CTO : Hello, IFA!
It’s great to be back in Berlin. My name is IP Park and I am thrilled to talk to you this morning about our future with artificial intelligence. What we have ahead of us is not just an improvement on our existing products. There is little doubt that AI will bring a fundamental change not only in the very nature of what we make but also in how we shape and live our lives.
And to make this kind of AI which will truly transform every aspect of our lives, we’re putting forward LG’s standard for artificial intelligence. It can be summarized in three words – Evolve, Connect and Open.
With these three simple ideas, we will begin a new chapter in LG’s journey of delivering innovation for a better life. This is our vision of intelligence which will deliver an even better life.
First, our artificial intelligence will evolve with time.
There are already lots of products that can see or hear. With visual recognition and voice recognition and everything else, our devices now receive and perceive much more information than ever before.
But that’s not the same as learning. The crucial difference is about using what you’ve seen and heard to understand – understand our needs and wishes. And this kind of intelligence cannot be manufactured in factory. It has to be evolved through continued and accumulating interaction with the user. So this kind of learning machine, an understanding machine, has to be an evolving machine.
Think about your old vinyl records or cassette tapes. Remember how they would wear out as you played your favourites over and over again? The challenge of that analogue age was to prevent the loss of information with usage.
The following digital age met that challenge with innovations like MP3 so that no matter how many times you used it, quality would not change.
And now, the age of artificial intelligence allows us to go even further. Information will now get better, richer, and deeper with usage and time.
Unlike electronic products so far which start depreciating from the moment you buy them, the value of AI products will actually appreciate with AI continuously evolving as it picks up more and more data. The more you use our products, the better they’ll evolve by learning about you.
Take LG ThinQ air conditioner for an example. It learns your living pattern over time so it cools the air when you need it the most.
Our robot vacuum cleaner learns about the members of your family, even your pets, so it can tell whether an object in front of it is a piece of furniture or your dog.
In the car, LG’s Cabin Monitoring Technology picks up on the driver’s facial expression and gestures so it can alert you when you start feeling drowsy.
And in not too distant a future, LG ThinQ in a driverless car will be able to automatically adjust the music, the lighting and the temperature for the passengers by learning what they’re doing.
The best thing about this? You won’t need instruction manuals because now our devices will learn about you, not the other way around.
And when I say ‘our devices will learn,’ I mean that in a more literal and ambitious sense. At the moment, most of AI is actually in the cloud because of the requirements for a huge amount of data and computing. While that might be good enough for some services, we also want to go further and develop algorithms which will allow edge computing to support AI in individual devices. As devices use their own data and computing power, they will evolve like kids learning as they grow.
And to make all these great evolving, learning machines, we’ve been developing our own deep learning technology. With LG research labs all around the world and through collaboration with top universities and research centres, we’ve been studying what evolving AI can mean for our lives. We’ve also been engaged with a global network of industry partners as well as promising start-ups. And this morning, let me quickly share some of the insights we’ve learned from these experts. Here’s one of the world’s leading authorities on artificial intelligence and a very good friend of mine – Dr. Andrew Ng.
Our second objective is CONNECT.
This is about how we integrate AI into a diverse portfolio of products so that you can enjoy the benefit of AI in every aspect of your life. At home, on the road, in the office, – wherever and whenever, whatever you’re doing.
Here, the challenge is to identify and serve touchpoints – all those moments in our lives which may be assisted, changed and improved with AI. Let’s take an example. LG’s robot vacuum cleaner made headlines in Israel this May for stopping a break-in. The Hom-bot had what we call ‘home guard’ function which detects motion, takes photos and sends them to the user’s phone. In this case, the burglar ran away as soon as he heard the Hom-Bot clicking away to take photos. The owner was at work when he received these footages on his phone and called the police.
You have to ask, well, what if the robot cleaner could connect with other devices? Could we have prevented the break-in in the first place? What else could it do? You see, with just one touchpoint, one smart device, we’re already creating an infinite potential.
And our goal is to realize that potential in every aspect of our lives. All LG products are Wi-Fi enabled with LG ThinQ app as a common interface. Our exhibition booth this year is all about how our lives will change by connecting.
But before I can tell you all about what we have in LG booth, I guess I need to know how to get there first. And for that, I’d like to introduce you to a special friend of mine, LG CLOi. We have her friends helping visitors at airports but this CLOi followed me here to Berlin to help me find my way around.
CTO: Hey, CLOi, how are you?
CLOi; Hello, IP. I’m good. It’s a wonderful day in Berlin.
CTO: Sure. And IFA is as great as ever. But I have a question for you, CLOi – what does I.F.A. mean?
CLOi. I.F.A. It’s a German word. Internationale Funkausstellung. It means ‘International Radio Show.’ But you won’t see radios in IFA 2018. It’s now one of the world’s largest trading shows for consumer electronics and home appliances.
CTO: Great. But it’s such a big show and I get lost all the time. CLOi, do you know where LG booth is?
CLOi: Of course. You’re now in Hall26b of Berlin ExpoCenter City and LG booth is in Hall18. It’s 800 m away and will take you about 10 minutes from here. There’s also an outdoor Signature Kitchen Suite. Do you want me to take you there?
CTO: Yes, but I have to do this first. CLOi, can you show me after I finish my keynote?

So in that 5G-connected autonomous car, between making calls to your family and watching a movie, you can control devices at your destination – so when you get home from work, you’ll have air conditioning and lights set for your arrival, oven pre-heated for your recipe of choice, and laundry done and dried!
Our B2B systems such as TVs for hotels, system air conditioning and digital signage will also benefit from progress in AI and data services so hotels, stores and offices can improve user experience and enhance productivity.
The idea is to use AI and big data to provide a seamlessly connected experience in our diverse portfolio of everyday products.
And to tell us more about this idea of connectivity and touchpoints, I am delighted to share the stage with Dr. Matthew Perry. As the Chairman of Open Connectivity Foundation, he is leading the industry-wide effort to bring us closer to that vision of seamlessly connected experience. And this is a particularly apt occasion for him to join me here because we’ve just signed yesterday a collaboration agreement with OCF to combine and further our efforts. Please welcome Matthew to the stage with a big round of applause!

in a second wave of OCF-Certified products delivered by our large partner base.
What does that mean for everyday consumers?
It means that everyday appliances and products,
can talk to each one another with a common IoT language.
It paves the way for safer devices.
It reduces headaches figuring out which devices will talk with others.
Mostly, it means we will finally be able to experience the full potential of IoT in our daily lives.
LG Electronics is working on its own vision for AI experiences,
so that its products and services will be able to communicate,
with existing IoT devices,
as well as legacy systems.

Our third and final goal is open – to open up our AI technology for shared growth together.
The world has become far too complex and far too diverse for any one company to be able to meet all the different demands of customers. Our philosophy is to provide the best AI experience, whether it comes from our own or from an external partner’s solution. And that’s why we’ve been working with global players like Google, Amazon, Yandex, and Alibaba as well as many local partners and start-ups.
LG’s latest offering for that shared goal is webOS. This is our operating system for smart products which we recently decided to open-source. webOS includes our own AI technology but it works equally well with Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa and it is compatible with OCF specifications. It could be an ideal platform for a wide range of devices such as smart watches, information displays, robots, or even automotive.
I’m going to ask Aylin over there to show us what this means in real life.

And to further illustrate the power of open collaboration, I’m going to invite another special guest, Dr. Kyungchul Kong, CEO of SG Robotics.
What he’s got on is a wearable robot which assists those with difficulties in walking. LG has been collaborating with SG Robotics, a pioneering Korean start-up, to develop this wonderful wearable technology.
CTO: Hey, Dr. Kong, thank you for coming. Nice to see you here.
Dr. Kong: Thank you.
CTO: You are making wearable robots. Can you tell us about your goal?
Dr. Kong: My goal is to make a person wearing a robot feel stronger and lighter. And to do that, we need to make the robot understand how we move and how to assist us.
CTO: Great. And it looks like each joint is already excellent. But I hear these joints can also become intelligent. Where does AI fit into this?
Dr. Kong: With AI, wearable robots will be much better at reading how you move as well as your environment and situation. They’ll then use that information to automatically and simultaneously adjust their operation to help you with what you need to do. And for us to be able to use AI to do that, we’ll certainly need open platforms like webOS.
LG already has many devices and applications which assist and improve our lives. Our wearable robot technology, which physically assists people, will benefit enormously from engaging with LG’s home appliance and AI technology. So before long, everyone will wear a robot all the time so that they can work longer, play longer and enjoy their lives better.
CTO: Wow. That’s really impressive and I can’t wait to see it. Thank you!
Just think about what we can do with that kind of AI-enabled empowerment. And in our booth this year, you’ll see how we’re getting closer to that vision. There is LG CLOi SuitBot, the latest in our collaboration with SG Robotics, as well as several different types of robots running on webOS. They really do bring together our R&D efforts in AI, robotics, software and data services. Again, openness will be key to expanding and diversifying their applications.
So there we are. LG’s standard for artificial intelligence that matters.
It should evolve over time and through learning.
It should connect every aspect of our everyday life seamlessly through a diverse portfolio of AI products.
And it should open up our products and platforms to facilitate open collaboration across the industry and beyond.
What this exciting vision of AI presents us is an opportunity to reinvent what we do as an industry –to redefine our relationship with customers, and to reimagine our lives.
And to that end, we must all work together.

현지 시간 오전 10시 30분, LG전자 CEO 조성진 부회장이 무대에 오르며 본격적인 ‘IFA 2018’의 개막을 알렸습니다. LG전자 최고경영진이 글로벌 주요 전시회에서 개막 기조연설을 하는 것은 이번이 처음으로, 그만큼 많은 이목이 집중되었습니다.
LG전자 인공지능의 지향점은?
인공지능 기술은 하루가 다르게 발전하고 있습니다. 고객은 인공지능을 활용해 다양한 기기와 대화를 하고, 기기는 스스로 고객을 학습해 우리에게 편리하고 윤택한 삶을 만들어주고 있죠. 그렇다면 앞으로는 인공지능이 우리의 삶에 어떤 영향을 미치게 될까요?
LG전자 CEO 조성진 부회장이 제시한 답은 ‘고객의 더 나은 삶(Better Life)’입니다. 이는 LG가 추구하는 지향점이기도 합니다.
조 부회장이 말하는 ‘더 나은 삶’은 ‘자유로운 삶’과 ‘현명한 삶’으로 표현할 수 있습니다. 인공지능은 고객이 집안 일에서 자유롭게 자신의 꿈을 추구하고, 현명한 선택을 할 수 있도록 우리의 삶을 더 낫게 만드는 역할을 할 것이라는 겁니다.
또한, 조 부회장은 그 동안 전자 제품들이 생활 공간별로 만들어져 왔다면, 앞으로는 인공지능 전자 제품들이 우리의 생활 영역을 하나로 연결해줄 것이라고 강조했습니다. 예를 들면, 고객이 귀가 시간에 맞춰 필요한 저녁 식사를 준비하는 상황에서, 인공지능 제품들은 퇴근시간에 맞춰 저녁 식사를 준비하고 필요한 제품을 미리 주문해 퇴근길에 찾아올 수 있도록 차량에 메시지를 보내는 것이죠.이는 인공지능으로 우리의 생활 방식을 완전히 새롭게 디자인한다는 개념입니다.
인공지능으로 더 나은 삶을 구현하는 3가지 방법
그렇다면 LG전자의 인공지능 ‘씽큐’는 ‘고객의 더 나은 삶’을 어떻게 만들어갈까요?
LG전자 CTO 박일평 사장은 이에 대한 기준점으로 ‘진화’, ‘접점’, ‘개방’이라는 3가지 키워드를 제시했습니다. 그는 이 세 가지가 고객의 더 나은 삶을 만드는 인공지능의 정의가 될 것이라고 강조했습니다.
① 쓰면 쓸수록 좋아지는 ‘진화’
먼저 박일평 사장은 “인공지능은 진화하는 것이어야만 한다”고 말했습니다. 현재 가전 제품들은 다양한 센서를 통해 많은 정보를 습득하고 있는데요. ‘진화’의 핵심은 보고 들은 것을 이해할 수 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 사용자와 끊임없이 교류해 사용자의 니즈를 스스로 이해하는 단계로 나아가야 한다는 거죠.
박 사장은 “인공지능으로 학습하는 기계는 사용할수록 쌓이는 데이터를 기반으로 고객을 더 잘 이해하게 되는 특성을 가지게 될 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
박 사장은 인공지능 석학 앤드류 응(Andrew Ng) 박사와의 인터뷰 영상을 통해 LG 인공지능 매커니즘이 어떻게 구현되는지를 소개하기도 했습니다. 앤드류 응 박사는 인공지능이 없는 가전을 상상조차 할 수 없는 날이 올 거라며, LG 가전에 머신 러닝이 구현되어가는 과정을 보는 것이 너무나 즐거운 일이라고 말했습니다.
② 생활의 모든 영역을 통합하는 ‘접점’
박 사장은 인공지능의 두 번째 기준으로 다양한 생활 공간을 의미 있게 통합하는 ‘접점’을 제시했습니다. 인공지능이 다양한 제품과 서비스를 연결해, 고객들이 언제 어디서나 모든 생활 영역에서 인공지능의 편리함을 누릴 수 있다는 것입니다.
그는 다양한 생활 공간을 연결하는 인공지능의 ‘접점’들을 LG전자 부스 내 ‘LG 씽큐 존’에서 체험할 수 있을 것이라 소개했습니다. 이 때 LG 클로이 안내로봇이 등장해 박일평 사장과 대화하며 기조연설이 열리는 장소에서 LG전자 부스까지의 길을 안내하기도 했죠.
이어서 박 사장은 실제로 ‘LG 씽큐’가 구현할 수 있는 ‘자유롭고 현명한 일상’의 모습을 예시를 들어가며 설명했습니다. 인공지능은 다양한 전자제품을 연결시켜서 우리 삶의 모든 다른 영역에서 혜택을 누릴 수 있게 할 것이고, 이 연결성은 우리 삶 속의 매 순간 끊임없이 이어지는 경험이어야 한다고 강조했습니다.
이후 글로벌 IoT 표준 단체인 ‘OCF (Open Connectivity Foundation)’의 매튜 페리(Matthew Perry) 의장이 등장해 가전 간 ‘연결’의 중요성을 다시 한 번 강조하고 LG전자의 적극적인 활동에 대해 소개했습니다.
③ 열린 생태계를 지향하는 ‘개방’
마지막으로 박일평 사장은 ‘고객의 더 나은 삶’을 위한 ‘개방’의 필요성을 강조했습니다.
박 사장은 이 자리에서 “개방을 통해 한계를 극복하고 고객에게 최고의 인공지능 경험을 제공할 수 있다”며 “고객이 진정으로 원하는 ‘더 나은 삶’을 위해 마음을 열고 그 동안 배운 것을 공유하자”고 열린 생태계를 제안했습니다. 협업을 통해 고객이 원하는 최상의 기능을 선사하는 기기를 선택할 수 있는 자유를 보장하자고 이야기했습니다.
‘개방’의 첫 사례로, LG전자가 열린 생태계 조성을 위해 독자 운영 체제인 ‘webOS’를 개방한 내용을 소개했습니다. 또 고정밀지도 대표기업 ‘히어(Here)’의 피터 쿠에르피크(Peter Kürpick) CTO와 웨어러블 로봇 스타트업 ‘SG로보틱스’ 공경철 대표가 기조연설 무대에 올라 LG전자 인공지능의 비전에 대해 공감하고 ‘개방’ 전략의 필요성을 역설했습니다.
특히 SG로보틱스 공 대표는 웨어러블 로봇을 직접 착용하고 나와 시연했습니다. 웨어러블 로봇을 입고도 축구공을 찰 수 있을 만큼 움직임이 자유로워 많은 관람객의 감탄이 이어졌습니다.
약 1시간 남짓 진행된 IFA 2018 개막 기조연설은 앞으로 인공지능이 우리 일상 생활을 어떻게 바꿔나갈지, 또 LG전자는 인공지능을 어떤 방향으로 발전시켜 나갈지 예상해볼 수 있는 시간이었습니다. 앞으로도 LG전자 인공지능 ‘씽큐’의 행보에 많은 관심 부탁 드립니다.
