기아의 고통에 시달리는 아시아인에게 희망을 선물하다

많은 기업들이 CSR(기업의 사회적 책임) 활동을 해오고 있지만, 대부분 일시적인 제품판매를 위한 마케팅 프로모션 또는 홍보용 이벤트에 그치곤 합니다. 영리를 추구하는 기업의 입장에서 어찌 보면 당연한 결과인지도 모르겠습니다.

하지만, LG전자는 보다 장기적인 관점에서 기업의 존립 기반이 된 지역사회가 안고 있는 문제 해결에 동참하는 것은 물론 지역사회가 발전할 수 있도록 성장기반을 마련하는 것에 집중해 왔는데요. 그 대표적인 활동으로 2009년부터 UN WFP(유엔 세계식량계획)와 함께 진행 중인 ‘LG 희망마을’, ‘LG 희망학교’가 있습니다. (관련 포스팅: 2010/03/11 – 에티오피아 산골 마을에도 희망이 자란다)

2011년부터는 그 대상을 아시아로 확대해 방글라데시(5,000가구)와 캄보디아(2,000가구)’ 에서 ‘LG희망가족- 아시아를 위한 회복력 증진 프로젝트 (Enhancing Resilience Project for Asia)’를 추진 중에 있습니다. 가난과 기아에 시달리는 빈곤층 가족들에게 일거리를 제공하고 마을의 기반 시설을 확충해 기아의 덫에서 스스로 빠져나올 수 있게 하는 것을 목표로 하고 있는데요. 오늘은 바로 이 LG 희망가족 프로젝트의 진행경과를 살펴보기 위해 지난 달 방글라데시와 캄보디아를 방문한 이본느 테(Yvonne Teh)의 이야기를 전해 드리도록 하겠습니다.

극심한 영양 실조와 가난, 굶주림이 머무는 곳

안녕하세요? LG전자 동남아지역대표 CSR Manager로 활동 중인 이본느입니다. 저는 지난봄 LG희망가족 프로젝트의 일원으로 방글라데시와 캄보디아를 방문하였습니다. 오랜 시간 차와 배를 번갈아 타야 했던 것은 물론 살을 태울 듯한 열기를 이겨내야 했기 때문에 어느 순간에는 마치 몸이 녹아내리는 듯한 착각마저 일 정도였습니다. 하지만 이 곳에 도착하고 보니 제가 한 고생은 아무것도 아니란 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그 곳에서 저를 기다리고 있던 것은 제가 상상조차 할 수 없었던 극심한 영양실조와 가난, 그리고 굶주림뿐이었기 때문입니다.

제가 방문한 곳은 마을 사람들의 생존을 위해 필요한 먹을 거리가 절대적으로 부족한 곳이었습니다. 물 한 모금을 마시기 위해 최소 1Km 이상을 걸어야 하고, 변변한 화장실조차 없어 위생보건체계가 전혀 갖춰져 있지 않을 정도니, 건강을 유지하고 활기찬 삶을 영위한다는 말 자체가 사치로 느껴질 뿐이었지요. 물론 전기조차 들어오지 않으니 전자제품을 사용한다는 것은 아예 생각조차 할 수도 없었습니다.

문득 제가 별 생각 없이 누려 왔던 하루 세 끼의 식사와 깨끗한 물, 편리한 화장실 등이 얼마나 소중하게 느껴졌는지 모릅니다. 이들에 비해 제가 얼마나 큰 사치를 누려왔다는 것도요. 그제야 비로소 왜 우리 LG전자가 굶주림으로 고통 받는 아프리카와 아시아에 깊은 관심을 갖게 되었는지, 빈곤국가들의 식량 문제를 개선하기 위한 LG전자의 희망가족 프로젝트가 왜 중요한지도 알 수 있었습니다.

LG 희망가족 프로젝트가 그 첫 번째 대상지로 캄보디아와 방글라데시를 선택한 것은 이 두 나라가 열악한 사회기반시설로 매년 홍수와 가뭄 등의 자연재해로 고통을 받고 있기 때문입니다. 그러다 보니 전 국민의 40%가 UN에서 권장하는 1일 음식량 조차 섭취하지 못하는 일이 많아 저체중 인구비율, 영양실조 인구 비율도 아시아에서 가장 높습니다.

현재 LG전자는 가뭄과 홍수가 빈번한 캄보디아와 방글라데시에 희망가족 7,000가구를 선정한 후, 이들과 함께 홍수를 대비한 지반 상승 작업(땅 돋우기), 도로 건설, 배수로 구축 등 마을 인프라 구축 사업을 진행 중에 있습니다. 이 사업에 참여하는 빈곤층 가족은 노동의 대가로 식량과 임금을 받을 수 있으니, 마을 사람들은 가난에서 탈출할 수 있어 좋고, 마을은 발전하는 셈입니다.

쌀, 콩, 식물성 식용유가 포함된 영양가 있는 음식 바구니

가장 인상 깊었던 점은 해당 가족들에게 평소보다 더 ‘영양가 있는 음식 바구니’를 전달했다는 사실입니다. 보통UN WFP에서 제공하는 음식은 오로지 흰 쌀뿐이지만 이번 프로젝트에서는 UN WFP 최초로 완전한 영양가를 갖춘 식품을 제공하기 위해 콩과 식용유까지 지원 품목을 확대하였습니다. 단순히 식량 확보나 기아 문제뿐 아니라 어린이 임산부, 수유모의 영양 상태를 증진하는 노력도 기울이게 된 것입니다. 방글라데시에서도 가장 식량 사정이 열악하고 자연재해가 빈번하게 발생하는 지역인 최남단 바리살까지 도움을 주게 된 것도 처음이라고 하네요. 앞으로는 자연재해 대응 훈련과 기후변화 대응 교육, 농업 기술 전수 등 다양한 프로그램도 진행할 계획이라고 합니다.

기아 해결만이 아닌 더 건강한 삶을 위한 노력

이번 방문을 통해 제가 얻은 값진 교훈은 세상에는 상상조차 할 수 없을 정도로 극심한 가난과 기아의 고통에 시달리는 사람들이 정말로 많다는 것, 그리고 그 사람들을 순수한 열정으로 도와주는 이들 역시 많기에 아직 세상은 아름답다는 점입니다. 누군가 알아주지 않더라도 타인의 더 밝은 미래를 위해 스스로 희망이 된 사람들이기 때문입니다. 저 역시 그 일원이 될 수 있어 얼마나 가슴 뿌듯했는지 모릅니다. 저의 이번 경험이 빈곤과 기아 해결을 위한 사람들의 애정과 관심을 끌어올리는데 작은 도움이 되기를 바랍니다. 많은 사람들의 관심과 동참이 전 세계 기아 문제를 해결하는데 한 걸음 더 다가서는 길이라고 믿습니다. 제 글을 읽으시는 여러분께서도 많이 알려주시고 동참해주시기를 부탁 드립니다.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the new business buzzword in today corporate world with the current CSR activities which most of the cases focusing on attaining compliance and branding, but LG Electronics have go beyond that by putting an effort and resources on creating ‘shared value’ which promote sustainable development with the targeted communities.

LG Hope Family – Enhancing Resilience Project for Asia in a partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), LG aim to contribute to real change in a sustainable manner to help the families and communities lifted permanently out of poverty. The implemented projects provide food in exchange for work and make it possible for the poor and hungry to devote time and energy to taking the first steps out of the hunger trap.

Through LG Hope Family, I had a chance to visit both Bangladesh and Cambodia for the first time and it was a meaningful, enriching and great trip! Even though the trip was pretty tough physically and emotionally, long hours of sitting in the car and ferry (we covered up to 8hours drive on some days), weather is killing us especially in Cambodia scorching hot…

I almost melted although I came from a country which is hot and humid all year round but I hardly stay under the sun for too long! But whatever I have gone through during the trip is really nothing compares to the pain which these ultra poor and vulnerable families who are undernourished, suffering from poverty, hunger, and malnutrition.

The site visit is one of the most valuable and unforgettable experiences; definitely an eye-opening to see with my own eyes and witness the actual living conditions and environment for the ultra-poor communities. I realised how fortunate and pampered we are, and how many of our comforts have become our necessities…. with at least minimum 3 meals in a day, everyday we can decide and have choice for what we feel like eating, access to clean water, restroom, electricity…. but they don’t!

They don’t get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life, they don’t have choice for food every day is about finding enough food to survive, they have to walk at least 1km to get access to pump water, no restroom not even in their house, no electricity so no electronics appliances, etc.

I’m happy to see the improvement and change LG have brought to the target beneficiaries/communities such as reduce level of household food insecurity, community-based assets and infrastructure e.g. canal, road, ground raising and many more.

What impressed me most is that with a clear mission in creating shared value and sustainable development – LG for the first time has allowed WFP to provide more “nutritious food basket” to these targeted families cause usually the food provided is only white rice but under the support from LGE particularly for this project, WFP for the first time is able to extend pulses and cooking oil to these families as a complete nutritious food to them.

Not only we are targeting the issues on food security & hunger but also to improve the nutritional status of undernourished children, pregnant and lactating women. Another first time is WFP expanded geographically to reach out the Southern part of Bangladesh (Barisal) the most food insecure and disaster prone areas of the country.

With LGE support – Hope Family – Enhancing Resilience Project has made it possible to reach out to these ultra-poor families who are very vulnerable communities against weather related shocks/natural disasters.

It’s really nice to know there are people and organisations out there that are full of passion, genuinely want to help the poorest and most vulnerable by bringing them hope for a brighter future. I’m happy to be part of this too to make the difference by spreading the word, help to raise awareness about hunger is an important part of the solution– Let’s fight against hunger!
