‘펍’에서 맥주 한 잔

퍼블릭 하우스의 약칭인 ‘펍’은 ‘펍문화’라는 말을 낳을 만큼 오랜 역사와 전통을 자랑한다. 런던 사람들의 생활 깊숙이 뿌리내리고 있는 펍은 단순한 술집이 아닌, 문화 교류의 장이기도 하다. 보통 펍들은 건물 1층에 자리잡고 있으며 가게 주위에 화분이 걸려 있어 한눈에 찾기 쉽다.

공원에서 책 한 권

삶을 맑고 청량한 공기로 채우며 사는 법을 아는 런던 사람들. 이들은 시간도 쉬어가고, 지친 몸도 쉬어갈 수 있는 공원을 곳곳에 갖고 있다. 하이드 파크, 켄싱턴 가든, 홀랜드 파크 등 런던의 유명 공원들은 여유의 가치를 일깨운다.

과거 왕실 공원의 일부였던 하이드 파크는 현재 런던 중심가에서 가장 큰 공원 중 하나로 그 규모와 스피커즈 코너가 매우 유명하다. 스피커즈 코너는 예전, 경찰이 정치 집회의 해산을 시도함에 따라 발발한 폭동을 가라앉히고 사람들이 자유로운 발언을 할 수 있는 장소를 만들자는 목적으로 1872년에 만들어졌다. 현재도 많은 이들이 일요일마다 가두 연단에 서서 정치와 종교 및 기타 주제에 대한 의견을 피력하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 요즘처럼 날씨가 점차 따뜻해지는 시기에는 소풍 장소로 안성맞춤이다.

옥스퍼드 거리는 유행의 최첨단을 달리는 곳은 아니지만 런던 중심지의 주요 쇼핑 번화가 중 하나. 거대 백화점들과 수많은 유명 브랜드의 본점 및 소규모 상점들을 포함, 약 550 여 개의 상점이 모여 있는 이곳은 유럽에서 가장 붐비는 쇼핑가라 할 수 있다. 리전트 거리 역시 런던 중서부지역의 주요 소핑 번화가 중 한 곳. 해외 관광객과 런던 시민 모두에게 매우 유명하다. 영국 표준판 모노폴리 보드게임에 나오는 바로 그 거리.

영국 런던의 중심가, 피카딜리에서 LG를 만나다.

런던 국립 미술관에서 쉬어가자

1824년 트라팔가 광장 위에 설립된 런던 국립 미술관은 13세기 중반부터 19세기에 만들어진 다양한 예술작품 2,300여 점을 전시하고 있다. 관광객들이 이곳을 좋아하는 가장 큰 이유는 박물관 본관을 무료로 관람할 수 있기 때문(특별 전시회 제외). 또 넉넉한 광장 계단에 앉아 여독을 풀며 거리 공연을 감상하기에도 매우 좋다.

버킹엄 궁전의 위병 교대식도 볼거리

버킹엄 궁전은 영국 왕실의 런던 관저이다. 궁전 의전실은 매년 8월부터 9월까지, 즉 여름에 대중에게 개방된다. 궁전의 앞마당은 그 유명한 위병 교대식이 열리는 곳으로써 여름 개방기간 동안 매일 관광객들에게 볼거리를 제공한다.

런던의 상징인 웨스트민스트 궁과 빅벤 시계탑

국회의사당이라고도 불리는 웨스트민스터 궁은 영국의 상원 및 하원의사당이 모여 행정 업무를 수행하는 영국 정계의 중심. 템즈 강 북쪽, 런던의 웨스트민스터 자치구 내에 위치하고 있으며 정부 청사 및 유서 깊은 웨스트민스터 사원과 가깝다. 동쪽에는 영국과 런던을 상징하는 랜드마크인 빅 벤 시계탑이 있다.

런던 수족관과 런던 아이

템즈 강 남쪽의 주의회 회관 일층에서 찾을 수 있는 런던 수족관은 1997년에 개관한 이후 현재까지 런던에서 가장 다양한 해양 생물들을 볼 수 있는 곳이다. 매년 약 100만 명의 관광객이 이 곳을 찾는다고. 135미터 높이를 자랑하며 근처 템즈 강변에 우뚝 서 있는 놀이기구가 바로 멀린 엔터테인먼트의 ‘런던 아이’다. 유럽에서 가장 큰 관람회전차인 런던 아이는 특별한 날에 예약할 경우 샴페인을 제공하기도 한다. 런던 아이에서 런던의 아름다운 야경을 바라보는 것으로 완벽한 런던 1일 투어를 마감하자.

Pub is an abbreviated term for public house, and has developed with the public of England for generations, creating a unique tradition and even a new term called “pub culture.” It is not just a simple bar, but a place for cultural exchanges. Pubs are usually located on the ground floor of a building and can be easily noticed with their flowerpots hanging out.

Reading Leisurely at a Park

Londoners value the clean and fresh air parks provide for them. They have many within London, where they go to rest or spend time. Their famous gardens, such as the Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and Holland Park, tell us how much they value relaxing atmospheres.

Hyde Park | 09:00am

Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in central London, and one of the Royal Parks of London, famous for its size and Speakers’ Corner. Speaker’s Corner was established to create a venue where people would be allowed to speak freely in 1872 in response to riots after police tried to disband a political meeting. Here, every Sunday people stand on a soap box and voice their views on political, religious or other items, sometimes interrupted and challenged by their audience. It’s a great place for picnics since the weather’s getting warmer.

Oxford Street and Regent Street (shopping street) | 11:00am

It is the major shopping street in central London, though not the most expensive or fashionable. There are about 550 shops in Oxford Street; it is Europe’s busiest shopping street, as well as the densest. Oxford Street is home to major department stores and numerous brands’ flagship stores, as well as hundreds of smaller shops. Regent Street is another major shopping street in London’s West End, well known to tourists and Londoners alike. The street is one of the locations on the standard UK version of the Monopoly board game.

Piccadilly Circus and China Town | 12:30pm

The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building, as well as the Shaftesbury memorial fountain and statue of an archer popularly known as Eros. You can also see LG’s neon sign on one of the buildings. It’s a popular place for musical lovers from all over the world for shows like The Phantom of the Opera, Mama Mia, Lion King etc. It’s lunch time so we can head to China Town for some British-Chinese food. I highly recommend ‘Golden Pagoda” which is located in the heart of China Town. This restaurant promises never to disappoint whether you are looking for a quick meal just before you go to the theatre or if you are looking for a decent sit-down meal complimented by friendly efficient customer service. The National Gallery Trafalgar square | 3:00pm

The National Gallery in London was founded in 1824 and houses a rich collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900 in its home on Trafalgar Square. Tourists seem to love this place because the entry to the main collection is free of charge (except for some special exhibitions). It is also a good place to rest your legs and watch all the street performances sitting on the stairs. At the square’s heart is the famous Nelson’s Column, which is guarded by four lion statues at its base.

Buckingham Palace | 4:30pm

Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch. The state rooms, used for official and state entertaining, are open to the public each year for most of August and September, as part of the Palace’s Summer Opening. The Forecourt of Buckingham Palace is used for Changing of the Guard, a major ceremony and tourist attraction (daily during the summer months).

Palace of Westminster and Big Ben | 6:00pm

The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is the meeting place of the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom—the House of Lords and the House of Commons. It lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the heart of the London borough of the City of Westminster, close to the historic Westminster Abbey and the government buildings. The Palace is one of the centres of political life in the United Kingdom. Its Clock Tower, in particular, which has become known as “Big Ben” after its main bell, is an iconic landmark of London and the United Kingdom in general, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city.

Sea Life London Aquarium | 7:00pm

The Sea Life London Aquarium is located on the ground floor of County Hall on the South Bank of the River Thames in central London, near the Merlin Entertainments London Eye. It first opened in March 1997 and remains the capital’s largest collection of aquatic species. The attraction claims that a million visitors a year view its displays. The Merlin Entertainments London Eye (commonly the London Eye, or Millennium Wheel) is a giant 135-metre (443 ft) tall Ferris wheel situated on the banks of the River Thames. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by over 3.5 million people annually.
