안녕하세요. LG전자 미국 휴대폰 법인인 LGEMA(LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A.)의 드미트라(Demetra)입니다.  제가 지난번 CTIA 와이어리스 2009에서 빛난 스타일리시한 LG휴대폰 소식을 전해드렸는데요, 오늘은 더욱 흥미로운 소식 하나를 전해드리고자 합니다. 

LG전자 미국 법인에서는 해마다 LG 전미 문자왕 선발대회(LG U.S. National Texting Championship)를 개최하고 있는데요, 바로 지난 주에 제 3회 대회가 있었답니다. 6월 16일 막을 내린 이번 대회에서는 아이오와 주 데모인 시에 거주하는 15세의 케이트 무어(Kate Moore) 양이 우승자로 선발되었습니다. 케이트 양은 수많은 경쟁자들을 물리친 후 LG 전미 문자왕이라는 타이틀과 함께 상금으로 5만 달러(한화로 약 7,000만원)를 거머쥐었는데요, 미국 전역에서 이 대회에 참가한 사람들이 무려 250,000명 이상이었습니다!!! 

제3회 LG 전미 문자왕 선발대회는 2009년 6월 15일부터 이틀 간 뉴욕의 NEP 스튜디오에서 열렸습니다. 이번 대회의 최종 승자를 가리기 위해 참가자들에게 주어진 도전 과제는 ‘문자 공격(Text Attack)’, ‘눈 가리고 문자 입력(Blind Texting)’, ‘시간 제한(Pressure Cooker)’, ‘문자 피구(Text and Dodge)’ 등 참으로 다양했습니다. 각 도전 과제마다 참가자들은 상단에 높이 걸려 있는 커다란 LG PDP 스크린에 표시되는 문구를 각자의 LG enV3 모바일 폰으로 오타나 축약 없이 정확하게, 다른 경쟁자들보다 더 빠르게 입력해야 했습니다.

최종 승패를 판가름한 문구는 “Zippity Dooo Dahh Zippity Ayy…My oh MY, what a wonderful day! Plenty of sunshine Comin’ my way…ZippittyDooDahZippityAay! WondeRful feeling, Wonderful day!”였습니다. 케이트 양은 이 문구를 60초가 채 되기도 전에 정확하게 입력하는 데 성공했습니다. 대회 참가자들은 LG enV 모바일 폰 제품군의 최신 버전으로서 풀 쿼티 키패드를 장착하고 있는 신형 enV3 모바일 폰을 사용했습니다. 
 

대회가 끝난 후 케이트 양은 “최종 제시 문구를 들었을 때는 가슴이 너무 떨리고 저런 걸 어떻게 입력할까 싶더라구요. 그래도 결국에는 제 손가락이 다른 사람들보다 빨랐나봐요.  제가 올해의 우승자로 선발되서 너무 기뻐요.”라며 우승 소감을 밝혔습니다.
 
케이트 양은 문자왕 타이틀을 거머쥐기 위해 또래의 에린 핑크(Erin Fink) 양(15세)과 모건 딘다(Morgan Dynda) 양(14세)을 물리쳐야 했습니다. 같은 조지아 주 출신이자 자매 사이이기도 한 두 사람의 문자 입력 대결 준결승전에서 서로 맞붙게 되자 관중들 사이에는 숨소리조차 들리지 않았답니다. 일찌감치 선두로 나서며 결승전에 올라 있던 모건 양은 마침내 두 사람 중 승자인 케이트 양과 최종 승부를 가리게 되었습니다. 

최종 세 번의 라운드 중 첫 시합을 모건 양이 따내자 케이트 양은 잔뜩 긴장하기 시작했습니다. 긴박감이 한층 더 고조되었고 시합은 더욱 극적인 양상을 띠기 시작했습니다. 그러나 케이트 양은 쉽게 주저앉지 않고 둘째 라운드를 이겼습니다. 이렇게 해서 결국 마지막 라운드까지 오게 된 두 선수 중 케이트 양이 최종 제시 문구를 더 빠르고 완벽하게 입력해 우승을 차지했습니다. 심판들이 케이트 양을 우승자로 발표하자 숨죽이고 지켜보던 관중들 사이에서 환호가 터져나왔고 다양한 색상의 종이 조각들은 경기장 바닥을 장식했습니다. 케이트 양의 어머니는 당시 관중석에 있었는데 딸이 시합에서 이기고 5만 달러라는 큰 상금을 거머쥐자 크게 놀란 나머지 두 손으로 얼굴을 가리기까지 했답니다.

한편, 250,000명 이상의 참가자들이 경합을 벌인 끝에 전국 예선을 통과한 사람은 22명이었습니다. 본선에서는 우선 “서든 데스(Sudden Death)” 방식으로 시합을 치렀으며 여기서 끝까지 살아남은 6명의 경쟁자들은 이번에는 다양한 문자 입력 도전 과제를 소화하며 가능한 한 많은 점수를 쌓아야 했습니다.  도전 과제에서 다른 사람보다 많은 점수를 획득한 상위 3명의 경쟁자들은 마지막 라운드에서 또 다시 서로의 실력을 겨루었습니다. 이 관문까지 통과한 두 명의 최종 경쟁자들은 LG 전미 문자왕 자리를 두고 전통적인 경기 방식인 속도 시합으로 승부를 가렸습니다. 

정말 굉장한 대회였구요, 모두들 케이트 양을 무척이나 자랑스러워한답니다!!!

잠깐 소개  LG전자 휴대폰 문자보내기 대회란?
휴대폰 문자 보내기 대회는 2007년 미국에서 처음 개최된 이래 2008년 한국, 브라질에서 열렸고 2009년에는 약 15개 국가에서 확대 개최될 계획이다. 지난해 한국에서 열린 ‘LG 모바일 월드컵’의 초대 우승자는 배영호 군(17세)으로 우승 상금 1,000만 원을 획득한 바 있다.

Last week, we hosted the third annual LG U.S. National Texting Championship, which concluded on June 16 with 15-year-old Kate Moore from Des Moines, Iowa as the winner. Kate took home the title of the LG U.S. National Texting Champion, along with $50,000 in prize money, after beating out more than 250,000 participants nationally!!! 

The third annual LG U.S. National Championship took place over two days, with the final round and crowning of the winner in New York on June 16, 2009 at the NEP Studios.  During the competition, players competed in various challenges, including Text Attack, Blind Texting, Pressure Cooker, and Text and Dodge.  In each challenge, the contestants were typing in phrases on their LG enV3’s exactly as they appeared on the overhead LG plasma screens with no typos or abbreviations, ultimately trying to be quicker than their opponents. The winning phrase was “Zippity Dooo Dahh Zippity Ayy…My oh MY, what a wonderful day! Plenty of sunshine Comin’ my way…ZippittyDooDahZippityAay! WondeRful feeling, Wonderful day!” which Moore completed flawlessly in less than 60 seconds. The contestants used the new LG enV3 phone, the newest edition in the enV family, which features a full QWERTY keypad.

After the event, Kate said, “When I heard the final phrase, I got so nervous and thought how can I finish that! But apparently, my thumbs are faster than everyone else’s!  I’m so excited to be this year’s champion.”

Kate won the title of texting championship after beating sisters Erin Fink, 15, and Morgan Dynda, 14, both from Georgia.  The two sisters and best friends drew gasps from the crowd as they went head to head in a semi-final texting showdown in which Morgan came out on top, placing her in the final round where she competed against Kate.  After Morgan won the first battle of the three round finals, Kate began to tear up. The level of stress increased and the battle became more dramatic. However, Kate remained strong and won the 2nd round. With the final round important to both girls, the one to flawlessly complete the final phrase, fastest, was Kate. When the judges declared Kate the winner, the crowed erupted in cheers as confetti fell to the floor. Kate’s mom, in the audience, put her hands to her face and looked shocked as she watched her daughter win the competition and grand prize of $50,000.

Following national preliminary rounds that included more than 250,000 participants, the competition started off with 22 contestants who went through a “Sudden Death” round, resulting in 6 contestants that endured the various challenges to try and accumulate the most points for their texting skills.  The three top contestants with the most points following the challenges competed in a final qualifying round. The top two contestants then fought to be crowned the LG U.S. National Texting Champion in the traditional style of the competition, a speed tournament.

It was a great event and we’re all very proud of Kate!!!
